Corpus Reflection

The primary focus of my corpus was to outline and decipher similarities and differences between speech amongst female and male political figures. I used the question below as sort of a guiding light, to gain more knowledge on my question. I kept this in mind through out the whole process because it would be impossible for my question to ever be fully answered, since there is an infinite amount of answers to it. I decided to create a corpus with five political speeches from a female and five from a male. I chose to use Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to each represent their gender. I chose these political figures because there from the same political party (so that eliminate ideological differences) and there from the same relative time period. I also was cautious to use speeches that were pretty similar in discussion topics, for example, grappling with worldly or national issues.

As I began my investigation on this question, the first digital tool I used was Voyant. This was a good place to start probing my question as I looked at word frequencies and phrase frequencies. I also created word clouds to paraphrase common topics that each political figure discussed a lot.

After just skimming the surface of my research question with the use of Voyant, I went on to another digital platform, Antconc. This digital platform was less user friendly, but definitely more statistical. I used the information I learned from Voyant, being that woman was the second most frequent word in my corpus, to further this notion. I came to realize that Hillary uses it much more than Obama and the only time Obama uses it is when he is saying “men and women.” I found it interesting that Obama always says “men” before “women,” so I then looked back and Hillary’s speeches only to find that she only says “women and men.” She also uses this phrasing to describe the American population much fewer times, as she sees Americans as a united entity, rather than a separated group amongst genders. I then saw that Hillary tends to refer to American’s much more often as “citizens, people, or Americans.” Additionally, when Hillary uses the word Women she often is talking about the struggles women face not only in our country, but all over the world. I found it to be very interesting, that a woman candidate is still trying to prove who women are in this day and age. On the other hand a male candidate, whether is conscious or subconscious, is still separating the male and female population, almost as a sign of inequality.

Finally, to further my question even more I used Jigsaw. This was definitely the most complicated digital platform to use and took a little more practice to get a hold of. This tool is used to show how things connect, so I made word trees for the word “Women” and other words to describe the citizens. By doing this I was able to see how each word was used in context, and how politician subconsciously group the American people when addressing them.

All in all, I was only able to dip my toes in the pool of knowledge that was my research question. I was able to highlight some valuable differences and commonalities between female and male political speech, but there is so much left to learn. Through the collaboration of digital tools it is evident that each one provided me with a greater insight on my subject. As I go on, and continue to explore this notion, I want to look at how Hillary discusses women, and how Obama would discuss race, as those are both to significant aspect to each candidate become elected. In conclusion, creating my corpus and exploring my research question was truly a great learning experience, and I am eager to discover all that is left to learn.

Antconc and Voyant

Creating a corpus is not only an interesting task, but also a difficult one. When trying to plan out the construction of the corpus, a crucial aspect is that it has relevance and can answer a bigger question and deepen one’s knowledge. Without density and a well selected corpus, it would basically be useless. Moreover, when I chose to compare Hillary Clinton and Barack Obamas political speeches I was able to highlight the difference in female and male speeches for political figures. In doing this there are clear similarities and differences.

Amongst these commonalities and contrasting traits I was able to notice some very interesting things. For example, one of the first things I looked at when using Voyant was that Women was one of the most frequently used words. On the other hand, men was the 52nd most frequently used word. When looking into this notion further I realized that Hillary Clinton used it much more than Obama. I also went onto conclude that because the word women was used to so much, it is seemingly clear that women are still trying to prove there equality to men, and this is still an obstacle that women face in this day and age.

While exploring my corpus, and using different tools to probe the notion of the use of men and women, each tool helped me to see things differently. For example, as shown below, Voyant helped to illuminate the frequencies. But then when using Antconc, I was able to see the context with the use of both these words. With this I was able to tell that every single time Obama used the word women it was always in the context of “men and women.” This is interesting because he uses the phrase men and women to address the people of America, but never refers to just women. He also always says men and women instead of women and men, which also shows that he instinctually puts men before women. Additionally, I went on to look at Hillary’s use of the word women. Hillary never once uses it paired with the word men and uses it to address problems women face within society. Noticing this I went on and discovered that when Hillary is talking about the people of America she tends to identify them as “people, citizen, or Americans” rather than saying “men and women like Obama.” This highlights the fact that Obama sees men and women as more of a separate group, whereas Hillary clearly sees all citizens as a united front, regardless of their gender.

Evidently, each platform was able to present my corpus to me in a different light. Voyant is definitely more colorful, and easier on the eyes. It clearly showed me which words were used more frequent, and what main concepts were in my corpus as a whole. Antconc also did this but, in a sort of less user friendly way lacking color, and presented itself more factual. Although, antconc allowed me to see the context of the words better, and allowed me to find more information. But, both of these platforms in the end were able to help me gain a greater insight. They both showed different things and when collaborated together only allowed me to even further and deepen my knowledge.

At first when exploring the notion of creating a corpus, it was seemingly an easy task. Though, as I continued my journey in creating this corpus, I realized that my prior assumption couldn’t have been more false. Creating a corpus isn’t simply compiling random pieces of texts together. Rather, there are many other attributes in to creating a corpus that can actually be used to further one’s intelligence and knowledge on a subject. The whole point of a corpus is to ask questions, and gradually begin to get answers in order to create a bigger picture. This bigger picture doesn’t merely just answer a few questions but allows people to see a subject matter in a new light and sparks all new ideas.

My first exposure, to a corpus that truly brought light to a new subject was the one that we looked at in class. The slave narratives example was truly enlightening the way that the whole project was addressed. I found it absolutely fascinating to see all the things that most narratives have in common. With that, a common structure was also outlined within most of these narratives, and a structure to them is illuminated. Although, the purpose of the project was not to continuously revisit what most people know to be true about slave narratives. Instead, the objective of the project was to to uncover what hasn’t been discovered yet. There is an endless abyss of similarities and differences that could continuously be uncovered by scanning and analyzing all these texts. Furthermore, just by seeing all that could be done with one idea it inspired me to produce an insightful question that I wanted to seek answers on and have a project of my own.

With that being said, coming up with an idea was definitely not an easy task. I need to find a question that actually gave me, and others a deeper understanding about something relevant in the world. After much time I spent contemplating what I could possibly do my corpus on, analyzing the differences in political speech between male and female seemed fitting especially with the presidential elections just around the corner. To further this idea, I decided that I could represent the two speeches by two democrats (to eliminate and obvious differences), one being male and one being female. I chose to use Hillary Clintons political speeches as a representation for the female political speech. On the other hand, I chose Barack Obama as a representation for the male speech, also being a democrat, both making speeches in the same time period. With these speeches to fill my corpus I believe that it will allow me to better my understanding in the style and tone differences and similarities between male and and female political parties. This could also help identify which types of speech are more successful than others. In order to fully attain the most knowledge out of my project the most crucial part is for me to choose questions that will allow me to do this to the best of my ability. As I continue this project I am eager to see all the discoveries that will unfold and all that I will learn in analyzing my very own corpus.
